Looking for first aid courses in Perth? Learn why ARC-aligned first aid and CPR training matters, what DRSABCD really means, and what to expect from a nationally recognised first aid course at First Aid Certified in Osborne Park.
Everyday life in Perth… and the moment everything changes
Most days in Perth are pretty relaxed.
You might be at work in Osborne Park, watching the kids at sport, grabbing a coffee in Leederville or heading up the coast for a swim. And then, out of nowhere, someone collapses, chokes, stops breathing, or suffers a severe allergic reaction.
In those first few minutes before an ambulance arrives, it’s not the paramedics who make the biggest difference. It’s whoever is standing closest.
That’s why first aid courses in Perth are about much more than ticking a box for work. Quality training based on Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and ANZCOR guidelines gives you the confidence to step forward, not back, when it counts.
At First Aid Certified, all of our CPR and first aid training in Perth is aligned with these evidence-based guidelines – the same standards used by ambulance services, hospitals and major first aid providers across Australia.
Who sets the rules? The Australian Resuscitation Council & ANZCOR
If you’ve ever heard of DRSABCD, CPR ratios or how to use an AED, you’ve already met the work of the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and ANZCOR (Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation).
These bodies:
- Review current research on resuscitation and first aid
- Develop national guidelines for CPR, defibrillation and first aid
- Update flowcharts and recommendations when new evidence emerges
When you choose a first aid course in Perth that follows ARC/ANZCOR guidance, you know you’re learning:
- The right steps, in the right order
- Techniques with proven benefit in real emergencies
- Skills that match what paramedics and emergency departments expect you to do
At First Aid Certified, we build these guidelines into every session – from HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation to HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, Manual Handling and our specialist fire and emergency response courses.
The DRSABCD Action Plan – the backbone of first aid in Australia
The ARC recommends using the DRSABCD action plan whenever someone collapses or is seriously unwell.
Let’s break it down in simple terms – exactly how we do it in class.
D – Danger
First, you protect yourself, bystanders and the casualty.
- Look for live power, traffic, glass, aggressive behaviour, fire, water or chemicals
- Don’t rush in – if it’s unsafe, wait or make it safe before you touch the person
In our courses we use realistic Perth-style scenarios – worksites, childcare centres, aged care facilities, sports clubs – so you learn to spot hazards in the environments you actually work in.
R – Response
Check whether the person is responsive.
- Talk to them: “Can you hear me?” “Open your eyes.”
- Gently squeeze their shoulders or hand
- If there’s no response, treat it as a medical emergency
We also cover how to assess altered levels of consciousness and what to do if someone is confused, drowsy or only responding to pain.
S – Send for help (Call 000)
If they’re unresponsive or seriously unwell, Call 000.
- Put your phone on speaker so you can keep working while talking to the operator
- Get a colleague to meet the ambulance at the front of your site
- If there’s an AED on site, send someone to bring it immediately
In workplaces, we encourage you to know in advance:
- Where your nearest AED is
- The best entry point and parking for ambulances
- Any site-specific emergency numbers or procedures
A – Airway
You can’t breathe if your airway is blocked.
- Place the person on their back
- Gently tilt the head back and lift the chin
- Check for anything obvious in the mouth (vomit, food, dentures) and clear it if safe
For uninjured adults and older children, a simple head tilt–chin lift is usually enough. In trauma, we discuss modified techniques to protect the neck.
B – Breathing
Now check “Look, listen, feel” for normal breathing:
- Look for chest rise and fall
- Listen for regular breaths
- Feel for air movement on your cheek
Do this for no more than 10 seconds – if you’re unsure, treat it as not breathing normally and start CPR.
C – CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, start CPR immediately.
ANZCOR recommends:
- 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths
- Compression rate of 100–120 per minute
- Compression depth of at least one-third of the chest depth
- Minimise interruptions to compressions as much as possible
In class, you’ll practise:
- Hand placement in the centre of the chest
- Straight-arm technique to use your body weight instead of just arm strength
- CPR on adult, child and infant manikins
- Hands-only CPR options if you can’t or won’t provide breaths
We use feedback manikins so you can see and feel when your compressions hit the right depth and speed.
D – Defibrillation
Early use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can double or triple survival from sudden cardiac arrest when combined with CPR.
In your Perth first aid course you’ll learn how to:
- Turn the AED on and follow the voice prompts
- Place pads correctly on adults and children
- Make sure no one is touching the patient during analysis or shock
- Continue CPR between shocks until help arrives
We demystify AEDs – no medical background required. If you can follow recipe instructions, you can follow an AED.

- Emergency response
- Health and community services
- Aged care, disability support and education
You’ll get plenty of Perth-relevant stories, examples and tips that make the content stick.
Who should do a first aid course in Perth?
Short answer: almost everyone.
But it’s especially important if you are:
- A parent or carer – kids are masters of bumps, falls, choking and unexpected emergencies
- An educator or childcare worker – required for many roles and essential when you’re responsible for other people’s children
- A tradie or site worker – high-risk tasks, tools and machinery mean higher stakes
- An aged care or disability support worker – managing complex health needs and medications
- A sports coach or club volunteer – dealing with collisions, dehydration, asthma, concussion and more
- A FIFO or remote worker – where medical help may be delayed
Even if it’s not mandatory for your job, first aid training in Perth is one of the most valuable life skills you can pick up in a single day.
How often should you refresh your first aid and CPR?
The ARC and ANZCOR recommend that:
- CPR skills are refreshed at least every 12 months
- Full Provide First Aid is refreshed every three years
Why so often?
- Guidelines change as new research emerges
- Skills fade without practice – especially high-stress skills like CPR
- Your workplace, role and risks may change over time
If it’s been a while since your last first aid course in Perth, treat it as an upgrade, not a repeat. The content, guidelines and teaching methods have likely moved on since your last course.
