Course Overview

The Epilepsy and Seizure Support Course (NDIS) equips support workers with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills required to safely support individuals living with epilepsy.

This course focuses on recognising seizure activity, providing appropriate first aid, following Epilepsy Management Plans (EMP), escalating when required, and accurately documenting seizure events in line with NDIS and workplace requirements.

What you will learn

Participants will learn how to:
Explain epilepsy and understand why seizure presentations vary
Recognise common seizure types, triggers, and warning signs
Provide safe and appropriate seizure first aid
Deliver post-seizure care and monitoring
Follow an Epilepsy Management Plan (EMP)
Identify when to escalate and call emergency services
Document seizure events accurately and professionally

Course structure

Online learning (approx. 1 hour)

The online component covers key knowledge, including seizure recognition, risk management, and response principles.
This component must be completed before attending the practical session.

Face-to-face practical session (approx. 1 hour)

The practical session is conducted at the Subiaco Training Centre and includes hands-on practice with trainer guidance.

Participants will demonstrate competency in:

Scene safety and environmental risk control
Protecting the individual from injury during a seizure
Timing and observing seizure activity
Recovery positioning and airway monitoring
Post-seizure care and reassurance
Escalation decision-making and documentation

Scope of practice and safety information

This course provides seizure awareness and first aid training only.

It does not authorise participants to administer emergency seizure medication unless they have completed separate, workplace-approved training and have formal authorisation.

Assessment and certification

To receive a Certificate of Completion, participants must:

Complete the online learning module
Successfully complete the knowledge assessment
Demonstrate competency during the practical trainer sign-off
Certificates are issued upon successful completion of all components.
Build confidence, competence, and consistency when supporting people with epilepsy.
Delivered by experienced trainers at the Subiaco Training Centre, this course supports NDIS workers to safely respond to seizures in line with Epilepsy Management Plans.
